Hidden gems of Suilven | Wolftrail

"For me, Suilven is the epitome of wild Scotland. It’s unique shape and isolation amongst the wild landscape of Assynt, make Suilven a true gem of the highlands. Owned and managed by the local community, Suilven is an unmistakable icon of the region. Heading to a place like Suilven requires some preparation, ensuring the weather forecast is good, packing the appropriate kit and fuelling up before the long walk in.

The 8 km walk into the base of the mountain puts many off, and the wild weather that often plagues Scotland can make it a desolate place to journey too. Whilst only 731 m high, the climb from the base is a steep pathway with numerous switchbacks. The final ascent takes through a narrow gully section before you suddenly arrive at the ridge where you are treated to incredible views across the unmistakeable cnoc-and-lochan landscape of Assynt and the mountains to the south. From the ridge, there is a steady walk up to the summit, that boasts staggering views in all directions.

The exposed ridge of Suilven offers unbeatable views across the wild landscapes of the far north and out towards the ocean. It is a humbling feeling spending time in a place like Assynt, feeling so small in such a vast and remote landscape. Summiting Suilven is a proper adventure and a tough walk, but so worth it for the incredible views from the top, made all the better with an awesome group of friends to share it with." - Simon Hird
